Contextual - Overview

Contextual - Overview

The contextual sources offered have, primarily, been collected as a complement to the Initial Holograph Draft of 'Time Passes' by Virginia Woolf. The primary focus of this material is, therefore, the period of the creation of this manuscript, between 30th April and 25th May 1926. Other material is also included, where applicable, as a complement to this primary collection of material.

There are two clearly defined sub-categories of material, both applicable to this period of creation of the Initial Holograph Draft.

First Draft History - Personal

- This section introduces Woolf's diary entries and her surviving letters between 30th April and 25th May 1926, including those to her sister Vanessa Bell, her close friend Vita Sackville-West, and to others. Both diary entries and letters give vivid accounts of how the General Strike appeared from the ground, as well as commenting on how absorbed she was in the writing of 'Time Passes'.

First Draft History - Public

- This section contextualises the General Strike from letters recording her friends' reactions, newspaper articles for the period of the strike, and other contextual sources for the strike. This material includes daily articles for the British Gazette and British Worker, strike diaries, and photos of the event.

To access any of this material either use the main 'Contextual' menu, related material in the right side bar for any chosen page, image galleries, or simply search the site or catalogues to see what's available. The site index is also a good place to start. You can also try the following categories:
