Now again when autumn is far advanced it is possible
to attempt the house again. Moreover, all the beds are
empty; the air, the f gleam new full brush turned
so bare mattresses, & as they nibble & fan, meet only
nothing that opposes them with warmth, or but
only hangings that flap, wood that creaks, & the
bare legs of tables, &the saucepans, book cases.
What people have shed & left - a pair of shoes, a
[?]shooting cap, a few hairpins, & a some old
gloves - & some faded
skirts &
trousers in
wardrobes those keep alone keep the shape of the
human shape & in their emptyness way indicate how
once they were filled & animated; how once, a
lady, crossin put standing before the long looking
glass put her hand to her head, & clasped, perhaps, some
put hair pins in her hair, or somebody hands were
busy with buttons & hooks; how once this looking glass
which now reflects deep like a
stage the washstand held in it a
.woman, the dash dart of a
dog was all moving with women's shapes dressing, &
reflected children, & the door opening; & almost
the incessant shadows & colours of a room full of
change. Now, if th for nig day after day, night after night,
gradually, uninterruptedly, the light gradually changes -
.Now [?]the turns, like a flower admiring itself in water,
reflecting itself in water; shaking its petals; in
a flower absorbed in its own reflection, which nothing stirs
only the shadows of the trees stooping & brandishinggravely indicated with a
shv shivering shadow a kind of obeisance; or a
rook makes a shad sha dark spot fly across the
pale green matting on the bedroom floor.
So it proceeds in loveliness So loveliness reigns, &
stillness , & & together compose something which
